Why kitchen sinks block in Malaysian homes
Malaysian kitchens cook a lot of fried food, rice and curries, and that shows up in the drains:
- Cooking oil and grease — poured hot, it cools and sticks to the pipe wall, then catches everything else.
- Rice and starchy scraps — they swell with water and pack into the trap.
- Small bones, seeds and tea leaves — they settle in the U-bend.
- Soap scum and detergent build-up that glues the mix together.
- Pipe problems — a waste pipe with too little slope, a sagging section or a cheap corrugated pipe that traps debris.
Five safe things to try first
- Remove standing water with a cup into a bucket so you can see what you are doing.
- Use a cup plunger. Seal the overflow or the second bowl with a wet cloth, then plunge firmly 10–15 times.
- Clean the trap. Put a basin underneath, unscrew the bottle trap or U-bend by hand, empty it and rinse it in another sink. Most simple blockages end here.
- Hot water and dish soap. Pour a kettle of hot — not boiling — water with a good squeeze of dish soap to soften grease. Boiling water can soften PVC joints.
- Baking soda and vinegar can freshen a slow drain, but they will not shift a solid grease plug.
What not to do
- Don’t use caustic drain cleaners on a fully blocked sink. They rarely dissolve grease plugs, can damage old pipes and seals, and turn the trap into a hazard for whoever opens it next.
- Don’t keep plunging a double sink without sealing the other side — you just push water back and forth.
- Don’t force a wire coat hanger deep into the pipe; it can puncture corrugated or old pipes.
When to call a plumber
Call for help if:
- Water still stands after cleaning the trap.
- The sink blocks again within days or weeks.
- Other drains are slow too, or water comes up the floor trap when the sink drains — the blockage is further down the line.
- You hear gurgling or smell sewage around the sink.
- In a condo, neighbours report the same problem — the shared stack may be blocked, which is the management’s responsibility.
A plumber clears deeper blockages with an electric drain-cleaning machine (a rotating spiral) or high-pressure water jetting, then flushes the line and checks every connected drain. See our kitchen blockage service.
What unblocking costs in Kuala Lumpur
| Job | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Kitchen sink unblock (trap or near blockage) | RM80 – RM180 |
| Deeper pipe blockage (drain machine) | RM150 – RM350 |
| High-pressure water jetting | RM300 – RM700 |
| Replace sink trap or waste pipe | RM80 – RM200 |
| Under-sink grease trap (supply & install) | RM250 – RM600 |
Stop it happening again
- Never pour oil down the sink. Let it cool, pour it into a bottle and throw it out with the rubbish.
- Scrape plates into the bin before washing, and use a sink strainer for rice and scraps.
- Flush with hot water once a week after washing up.
- Fit a grease trap if you fry a lot or run a home food business — it turns a recurring blockage into a quick monthly clean-out.
- Fix the pipe: if the waste pipe sags or is the corrugated type, replacing that section with a smooth pipe at the right slope often solves repeat blockages for good.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to pour boiling water down a blocked sink?
Use hot water from the tap or a kettle that has cooled slightly, not boiling water. Boiling water can soften or loosen PVC pipe joints, especially on older installations.
Why does water come up my floor trap when the sink drains?
The blockage is further down the shared drain line, past the point where the sink and floor trap join. Clearing the sink trap will not fix it — the line needs to be cleared with a drain machine or jetting.
How much does it cost to unblock a kitchen sink in KL?
A simple blockage in the trap or nearby pipe usually costs RM80–RM180. Deeper blockages needing a drain machine are around RM150–RM350, and high-pressure jetting RM300–RM700.
