DIY or hire? A quick rule of thumb
| Item | DIY difficulty | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Side table, stool, small shelf | Easy | DIY with the included tools |
| Chair sets, simple desk | Easy–moderate | DIY if you have an hour per item |
| Chest of drawers (MALM, HEMNES) | Moderate | DIY possible; drawers take patience |
| Bed frame | Moderate | Two people needed; hire if short on time |
| Storage bed / bunk bed | Hard | Hire — heavy parts, many fittings |
| Wardrobe (PAX, BRIMNES) | Hard | Hire — needs two people, levelling and wall anchoring |
| Kitchen or wall cabinets | Hard | Hire — load-bearing wall fixing |
How long does assembly really take?
Instruction times assume experience and the right tools. Realistic times for a first-timer are often double:
- Bed frame: 45–90 minutes (professional) vs 2–3 hours (first time).
- Chest of drawers: 1–2 hours vs 3–4 hours.
- PAX wardrobe with sliding doors and interior fittings: around half a day vs a full weekend.

Combining several items in one visit is usually better value than booking them separately. See our IKEA assembly service.
Anchoring tall furniture to KL walls
Tall wardrobes and shelves come with an anti-tip kit because they can topple onto children. The screws and plugs in the box are not suitable for every wall:
- Concrete walls (common in condos) need a hammer drill and proper wall plugs.
- Brick walls (common in landed homes) need plugs suited to brick and care near the mortar joints.
- Gypsum or cement-board partitions — increasingly common in newer condos — need cavity anchors, or fixing into a stud.
If you are not sure what your wall is made of, knock on it: a hollow sound usually means a partition.
Before you buy (or before we arrive)
- Measure the ceiling height. Tall wardrobes are assembled lying down and need extra headroom to be stood up.
- Check skirting boards, aircond pipes, switches and sockets where the furniture will stand.
- Check the door swing and drawer clearance in small condo bedrooms.
- Have the boxes delivered to the right room and keep all fitting bags together.
- Check your condo’s rules on drilling hours and contractor registration.
Non-IKEA flat-pack (Taobao, Shopee, Lazada)
Imported flat-pack furniture is common in Malaysia and often comes with unclear or Chinese-only instructions, mixed-up fittings or no wall anchors. It can be assembled just as well — but allow more time and send the product link or a photo of the boxes when you ask for a quote.
Frequently asked questions
How much does IKEA assembly cost in Kuala Lumpur?
Small items are usually RM30–RM80 each, chests of drawers RM60–RM150, bed frames RM80–RM200 and wardrobes RM150–RM450, with PAX sliding-door systems RM350–RM800. Several items in one visit is the best value.
Do I really need to anchor an IKEA wardrobe to the wall?
Yes. Tall wardrobes and shelves can tip over, especially with drawers open or children climbing. Use the anti-tip kit with fixings suited to your wall type — concrete, brick or partition.
Can you assemble furniture with Chinese-only instructions?
Yes. Imported flat-pack from Taobao, Shopee or Lazada can be assembled; send the product link or photos of the boxes so the quote allows for the extra time.
